Patch Tuesday for February 2011

Hello All,

Just a reminder that yesterday, Feb 8th, was Microsoft Patch Tuesday. For those of you not in the know, the second Tuesday of each month is when Microsoft release security fixes for Windows and Office. Make sure your computer is up-to-date by running the Windows Update utility. You’ll find it in your start menu in the “Programs” section.

New Website Page–Links

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to let all of you know about the new website page I have published to this site – “Links”!

I know, I know. Big Deal. Another page of random links that no one uses and fills up website space. Not true. These are a list of links to websites and services that I use often, and some of them everyday. The links encompass news and podcasts, software and services, how-tos and tips, and some great resources for kids online. My criteria for sharing these links is: Is the site too “techie” or “geeky” for the average user? If not then I will share it.

Here are the five sections I have added to the page:

  • General Computing
  • Security & Backup Resources
  • Windows Resources
  • Mac Resources
  • Kids & The Internet

As I come across more links that I think will be useful to a average computer user I will include them in the list. Hope these help.

Backup When?

We’re back with the latest installment in our backup series. Today we are going to cover how often you should perform backups. There are three basic options we are going to cover in regards to backup frequency:

  1. Autosave – Backup while you work on a document
  2. Document Backups – Backup all user generated files after you are finished with them
  3. System Backups – Backup entire system at a designated time

Let’s cover the “Autosave” feature first.

Backup Where?

Are you bored yet? I told you backup was “exciting”! Today we take the next step in creating our backup plan. In my last post we talked about what we should be backing up: your system and your documents. So now we will take a look the where of our backup plan. There are two choices for most small business and home users: 1) local and 2)offsite. I use a very simple test to determine the difference between the two. If you can throw a rock and hit the device that stores your data then it is local, otherwise it’s offsite. We will take a look at what these two terms mean, give some common examples of each, throw out some pros and cons and finally discuss why you need both.
